


The role of Paul is played by Corey Hawkins, who made his Broadway debut in the 2013 production of Romeo and Juliet. He has also been seen in the films Tallulah, Pitch Perfect, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Big Stone Gap. The role of John is played by John Benjamin Hickey, who won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor for his role as Felix Turner in the 2011 production of The Normal Heart. On screen, she is well known for her roles in "American Beauty", “The West Wing,” The Hours, The Help, “Masters of Sex,” and "10 Things I Hate About You". On Broadway, she has been seen in the musical 9 to 5 in 2009, and the 1997-1998 production of A View from the Bridge, both of which earned her Tony Award nominations. Guare’s play may have lost some shock value as its themes have become more mainstream in the intervening decades, but his elegant script holds up nicely - quality writing is as hard to come by as ever. Among the better turns are Greg Louis as the Kittredge’s South African business partner and Linus Ekman as Paul’s inadvertent Pygmalion. The play’s 15 supporting characters prove a mixed bag, with performances spanning a wide range of professional skill. In fact, the Kittredges are far more rapacious and exploitative in their “respectable” business, a point not lost on Ouisa as she comes to appreciate Paul’s talents. Ohaeri’s layered portrayal shows the needy desperation behind Paul’s poised persona - he’s really pursuing the same ideals of reinvented identity and social-climbing as his victims.


Though Paul’s scamming has unintended tragic consequences, his motives aren’t criminal in a conventional sense. Milton Justice’s staging navigates the moral complexities with assured clarity.
